Sunday 1 January 2017
After the excesses of the festive season and with the new year upon us, HRCH’s health improvement team are here to offer a range of health tips and advice to help you maintain a balanced lifestyle and have a healthy, happy new year in 2017.
Boost your immune system
Stella Oryang, health advisor for the One You Hounslow service, says: “As the cold weather continues into the new year, it is important to look after ourselves. Therefore choosing healthier habits such as eating healthily, keeping active, reducing alcohol intake and stopping smoking can help support and boost the body’s immune system. If your immune system is not working effectively, it would make you more vulnerable to preventable invading diseases, bacteria and viruses.
“Stress can also supress our immune system, therefore keeping a check on our stress levels and getting a good night’s sleep over will also help our body to work at its best.”
Buvana Ailoo, service manager for One You Hounslow, says: “As the festive season s a very busy time for people, it can be difficult to keep physically active. However, by building a short exercise routine into your everyday life in the new year, you can still look after your wellbeing without taking up lot of your time.
“For example, you can park your car a bit further and walk the rest or get off your stop a bit earlier to add more moving time to your day.”
Go Dry for January
Many people will drink too much over the festive period – but excess alcohol raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, liver disease, depression, dementia and cancer of the mouth, throat, stomach, liver and breast. And it’s full of calories!
Taking part in Dry January will also benefit you in a number of ways - by helping your new year waistline by reducing the number of calories you consume, helping your finances by not spending money on alcohol and improving your general health. So why not sign up and take the challenge!
