- Free help and support for smokers at Tesco Extra Osterley event, Wednesday 14 October
- Smoking is the most preventable cause of cancer in the world - accounting for more than 1 in 4 UK cancer deaths.
The NHS stop smoking team for Hounslow is running an event at Tesco Extra, Osterley on Wednesday 14 October to help and support local smokers during Stoptober – the 28 day stop smoking challenge which runs throughout October.
Hounslow Stop Smoking Service’s event takes place outside of the local Tesco Extra store and will provide Hounslow smokers with the opportunity to have their lung age and carbon monoxide level tested and get information on free Stoptober support offered by the local NHS trust.
The event is being run in partnership with other key local organisations in Hounslow, including the local NHS healthy lifestyles team and British Heart Foundation – who will also be on site to offer health checks and information on cardio vascular disease, diabetes, cholesterol and healthy eating.
The London Fire Brigade will also be on hand - offering local people the chance to sign up to have a free smoke alarm fitted in their home; whilst the Met Police will also be available to provide advice and support on crime prevention.
Frank Sims, chief executive for HRCH said: “This event offers a great opportunity for smokers to drop in at their local Tesco Extra and pick up all the help and support they need to go smoke free for good. Research has shown that smokers are five times more likely to go the distance of Stoptober and give up for good if they get a little extra help from local NHS specialists.”
He adds: “The range of services that our Hounslow Stop Smoking team provide are designed to fit all the different needs of smokers wanting to quit. Anyone who comes down to the Hounslow stop smoking service's health promotion day will receive free advice and support to help them take the first steps to going smoke free.”
Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust’s Stop Smoking Service has been running for over 10 years and provides a wide range of support across the borough.
The team offers local people access to weekly drop-in clinics, a free six week programme with flexible times and locations for support, and access to Nicotine Replacement Therapy such as patches, inhalers and medicine. The local team helped over 1,500 people give up smoking in Hounslow between 2014 and 2015.
Smokers can enter their details at www.hrch.nhs.uk/hounslow-stop-smoking and a NHS stop smoking advisor will call back for a FREE, informal discussion about the support on offer in going smoke free.
Local people can also call the trust’s stop smoking advisors directly 020 8630 3255 / 020 3771 6180 Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm, or email firstname.lastname@example.org for on demand advice to give you the best chance of giving up for good or to book work group programmes.
The Stoptober event will be held on 14 October outside Tesco Extra, Osterley Park, in Isleworth from 10am – 4pm.
