Campaign helps local people walk the path to a healthier lifestyle

LiveWell Richmond organises free local health walks across the borough

Thursday 3 April 2014

Local people took the first steps towards achieving a healthier lifestyle during a week of free guided health walks run by Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust.

Walk Richmond Week was organised by the health trust to encourage and enable local people to walk more and improve their health and wellbeing.

The week culminated with a free healthy lifestyle event - featuring Zumba classes and a family friendly health walk - on Saturday 29 March at Richmond Adult Community College.

Attendees at the event also had the opportunity to find out about the range of free health improvement services that the Trust runs, including LiveWell Richmond – which supports and helps people to live healthier lifestyles; and Weigh2Lose – a free NHS weight management programme.

LiveWell Richmond’s health improvement manager, Michael Hughes said: “It was great to see so many people taking part in Walk Richmond Week. I hope we have inspired Richmond’s residents to live healthier lifestyles.

“It’s important that people have access to the right information and support that can help them realise the importance of physical activity. This event was about showing people it is as easy as literally taking a step to make simple changes to their lifestyle which can lead to significant improvements in their health.”

Pedometer challenge

Free pedometers with progress charts were handed out to attendees at the healthy lifestyle event for people to take part in the Trust’s LiveWell Richmond pedometer challenge.

The four week pedometer challenge encourages local people to walk more – by setting structured goals to increase their number of weekly steps from the average of 3000 steps up to a target of 10,000 steps a week.

The benefits of taking part in the challenge and walking more include improving your health, building stamina, burning excess calories and having a healthier heart.
