The Home Oxygen Service provides oxygen to patients with low oxygen levels (hypoxia) who have respiratory problems and a variety of other conditions.
Oxygen is only a treatment for hypoxia; it is not a treatment for breathlessness. Patients who may require oxygen should be assessed against national criteria from the British Thoracic Society guidelines.
Palliative care patients are exempted from formal oxygen assessment.
Oxygen can be ordered by community or hospital healthcare professionals, for short or long term use. In Richmond the oxygen service is provided by Air Liquide.
Since February 2006 Community Pharmacists are no longer able to supply oxygen due to recommendations from the Department of Health.
Air Liquide delivers oxygen supplies and equipment directly to the patient’s home. They will calculate how often oxygen needs to be delivered, according to the information provided by the patient’s healthcare professional.
