Recent research carried out within HRCH has helped to shape national cauda equina syndrome (CES) guidance.

The new guidance has recently been published to provide clinicians with clarity on how to assess, diagnose and treat this rare but serious condition.

A systematic review led by our Consultant MSK Physiotherapist, Julia Tabrah, concluded that digital rectal examination (DRE) of anal tone has a high risk of false reassurance and should no longer be used in clinical practice.

This finding has now been embedded into the national guidance which states that “DRE is not necessary”.

If you would like to know more about the pathology, diagnosis and triage of cauda equina syndrome, you can watch the video below, created by Julia.
